Expo agent-cli: bringing structure to mobile coding agents

Expo is experimenting with an agent-oriented interface. Businesses still need clear boundaries around changes and releases.

Expo introduced experimental agent-cli, providing agents with structured responses, exit codes and guidance on their next steps.

The KIMY perspective

Context mistakes are expensive: changing a native module is different from editing a screen. A useful workflow should make that distinction visible and retain an action trail. Our advice is to begin outside production with synthetic data and limited permissions. Measure avoided errors alongside the human interventions still required. A promising tool does not by itself justify automatic store releases or access to customer accounts. Decide which operations need review and make that decision part of the workflow.

What to check

  • Keep experiments separate from production accounts and data.
  • Review added dependencies and native changes.
  • Require explicit approval before a public release.
